Howden Park Centre - Building Exterior green 1

Latest Updates

The health and safety of our customers and staff is extremely important to us and we appreciate your ongoing support and patience during these unprecedented times.

Latest Update - Thursday 1 October

As like many theatres, we have been temporarily closed since the spring due to Covid-19 and our schedule of events has been suspended until 1 March 2021. Due to these unforeseen circumstances, Howden Park Centre has unfortunately lost a large amount of income in the last 6 months.

We told you in August that West Lothian Leisure, who operate our centre, applied to the Scottish Government's Performing Arts Venue Relief Fund for additional financial support of £95,000.

We are happy to announce that we have received the much needed boost to funding to secure the survival of our centre and to develop a programme of exciting new events in the coming months whilst the main theatre remains closed.

The majority of this funding will help offset ongoing costs and protect jobs, whilst the remainder will support a programme of creative activity including workshops, an exhibition and streamed performances. This activity will be developed and delivered by commissioned freelancers and local community groups.

Although the auditorium is currently closed, the venue continues to accommodate local groups including FireFly Arts and has introduced health & wellbeing activities until the Centre can re-open as an events venue in line with government guidelines.

Tim Dent, CEO of West Lothian Leisure said: "We are delighted this application for additional funding to help protect this much-loved cultural venue for the community, has been successful. The immediate priorities will be to ensure the venue is in a position to re-open - hopefully by the Spring 2021 and secondly, to retain our skilled and experienced team. In addition, the funding will enable us to remain visible, continue to engage with our audiences and wider public and raise our profile in the community.

Iain Munro, CEO, Creative Scotland said: "Despite the ongoing, detrimental impact that the Covid-19 pandemic is having on Scotland's performing arts venues, and on culture as a whole, it is positive that we can offer some funding to help venues navigate these extremely challenging times. I'm also encouraged to see that this funding will help venues across many different parts of Scotland where they form such an important part of the cultural life of local communities."

Thank you to all of our wonderful customers for your ongoing support during this time.

Latest Update - Wednesday 12 August

As like many theatres Howden Park Centre, managed by West Lothian Leisure (WLL), has been temporarily closed since the spring due to covid-19. The theatre's schedule of events will now continue to be suspended until 1 March 2021. The majority of shows from this year's programme are being moved to 2021 dates. The safety of our customers and staff remains our focus as we navigate our way through the pandemic.

What we are able to do now is open space bookings from the 14 September for community and commercial group hires with guidelines adhered to. We are also discussing options with local theatre group 'Firefly Arts' to allow them access to the theatre to continue to work with local youngsters on their successful drama programme. Unfortunately, our fabulous annual Pantomime will not run this year and will be greatly missed by all involved.

Tim Dent, Chief Executive of WLL said: "We have delayed a decision on this year's panto and the rest of the winter programme for as long as possible, but like much of the UK theatre and performance venue sector we have reached the conclusion that there is little prospect of performances without social distancing resuming anytime soon. We know social distancing in theatres is not viable. At Howden Park Centre our 290 capacity is reduced to 87 seats - even with just 1 metre social distancing in place. We know this will be disappointing news for so many, but we aim to see this pandemic out and return with a vibrant and exciting programme in the Spring 2021"

Howden Park Centre is applying to the Scottish Government Performance Venue Relief Fund for additional support. As well as the theatre the centre offers arts and classes to the local community and relies heavily on ticket sales to survive.

For those who already have tickets for Howden's 2020 programme these will still be valid for those shows that have been rescheduled to 2021. However, if your show is cancelled or you no longer wish to attend then you can apply for a refund or opt to support your local theatre by becoming a 'Friend of Howden' by donating your ticket or taking a credit note to attend a future show. This support will help preserve the future of the venue and continue to deliver theatrical shows, high profile entertainers, our annual Panto as well as a provide cultural community hub for locals.

The majority of Howden's staff remain on furlough and a small team will be brought back to contact customers regarding their tickets. We appreciate your patience and support as we work through this process and encourage you to hold on to your tickets as we reschedule shows.

COVID-19: Customer update Friday 20 March

Following the schools closure announcement and ongoing advice and guidance in relation to coronavirus, we have reluctantly taken the decision to close Howden Park Centre from Friday 20 March at 12 noon. Initially this closure is until 30 April when we will review the situation and provide further information. All of West Lothian Leisure venues will be closed during this time.

An update will be released in the next few days on shows to be rescheduled or refunded. We appreciate your patience while this is finalised and ask you not to contact Box Office. Anyone with a ticket for an upcoming event will be contacted in due course with any updates.

As a charity we are reliant on ticket sales to continue to operate, it would make the world of difference to us if customers would consider donating ticket money or accepting a credit note rather than requesting a refund.

Tim Dent, CEO of West Lothian Leisure said "This has been an incredibly challenging time for everyone. As a charity we are reliant on memberships, lets and customer visit income, so closing venues has a significant impact on the organisation. We look forward to welcoming everyone back in more certain times and look forward to your continued support - for your own health and wellbeing and those who need it most in our community."

In the meantime we're working to bring you fresh content on our Xcite social media and provide online workouts to keep West Lothian active and motivated. Follow us, support each other, keep safe and stay healthy."

We ask our customers to take the time to read through info provided in the link to help answer queries you may have. This covers all West Lothian Leisure venues and services: Xcite/Howden Park Centre/Low Port/Polkemmet Golf Course and Driving Range/Secondary School Booking.
